Understanding your cycle while you're trying to conceive

Trying for a baby can be an exciting time, but it can also bring a lot of questions, uncertainty and sometimes frustration, particularly when things aren't happening quite as quickly as you'd hoped.

Perhaps you've only just started trying and want to give yourself the best possible start. Maybe you've been trying for a while and are beginning to wonder if something isn't quite right. Or perhaps you'd simply like to understand your body and menstrual cycle a little better.

Whatever has brought you here, I believe that understanding your own cycle is a really important place to start.

Your menstrual cycle

One of the first things I like to explore with women who are trying to conceive is their menstrual cycle.

We're often taught that a normal cycle lasts 28 days, with ovulation happening on day 14. But in reality, our bodies don't always follow the textbook, and that's perfectly normal.

Your cycle is made up of different phases, each playing an important role in preparing your body for a possible pregnancy.

Follicular Phase

This is the first part of your cycle, beginning on the first day of your period and continuing until ovulation.

During this time, follicles in your ovaries develop, oestrogen levels rise and the lining of your womb begins to thicken in preparation for a possible pregnancy.

The length of this phase can vary considerably from woman to woman, and even from one cycle to the next. This is one of the reasons why not everyone ovulates on day 14.

Ovulation Window

Ovulation is when a mature egg is released from the ovary.

Understanding when you ovulate can help you identify your fertile window, particularly if your cycles are longer, shorter or a little unpredictable.

After ovulation, your body enters the luteal phase.

Progesterone levels rise, helping to maintain the uterine lining and create the right environment for an early pregnancy.

This phase is generally more consistent in length than the follicular phase, although it can still vary between women.

Looking at your cycle as a whole, rather than focusing on a particular day, can give us a much better understanding of your individual fertility.

Cycle Regulation

We focus on balancing your natural phases, supporting healthy blood flow to the ovaries and creating a consistent, healthy foundation for conception.

Natural Fertility Support

How can acupuncture help?

Acupuncture can offer a gentle, supportive approach while you're trying to conceive naturally, whether you're just beginning your journey or have been trying for some time.

Research has explored whether acupuncture may influence ovulation, menstrual cycle regulation, reproductive hormones and the findings are encouraging.

When you come to see me, we'll look at the bigger picture.

I'll take time to understand your menstrual cycle, whether you're ovulating regularly, your general health, sleep, stress levels and how you're feeling emotionally.

If your periods are irregular, your cycles are particularly long or short, or you're experiencing spotting before your period, we'll explore these patterns together and consider whether any further investigations might be helpful.

Treatment is always tailored to you and where you are in your cycle, with a focus on supporting your overall wellbeing and helping you feel calmer and more supported throughout the process.

Hormonal Balance

By encouraging hormonal harmony, acupuncture supports optimal ovulation and helps nourish and create a lush receptive uterine lining, vital for natural implantation.

Supporting progesterone levels and creating a quiet, anchored space during the two-week wait to encourage successful implantation.

Stress Reduction

Lowering cortisol levels creates an environment where your body feels safe to conceive.

Helping manage the stress often associated with timing, keeping your nervous system calm and receptive.

Natural Fertility Care

How can acupuncture support a natural attempt?

Natural conception relies on a harmonious internal environment. We focus on regulating your unique cycle, enhancing blood flow to the reproductive organs, and optimising the quality of the uterine lining, all while calming the nervous system to create a receptive state for pregnancy.

When is the best time to start treatment?

Ideally, we begin working together 3 to 4 months before you plan to conceive. This timeframe allows us to work through approximately three full menstrual cycles, supporting the natural maturation process of the follicles and ensuring your system is grounded and prepared.

How often are appointments?

Most women find weekly or fortnightly sessions most beneficial. This consistency allows us to track changes across the follicular and luteal phases, adjusting the treatment protocol to match your body's natural rhythm during each part of the cycle.

Is the treatment gentle?

Yes, Five Element acupuncture is exceptionally gentle and reassuring. Most people feel a mild, brief sensation followed by a period of deep relaxation, often falling into a restorative sleep during the session.
